Softball Update

For a while it looked like it looked like the tiebreaker game between Pequea Valley and Annville Cleona would happen, until a 10-minute downpour did it in. With one of the schools having a school function, the option to delay the start or move to another venue was not feasible. In addition, Garret Park is not a league facility, so the game can’t be pushed to tomorrow like baseball could do. Therefore, Annville-Cleona and Pequea Valley have been named co-champions of Section 4. Congrats to both teams – their seasons were very similar & they represented their schools and the league in a manner in which they are both worthy champions.

For seeding purposes, the tie-breaker criteria # 4 was use (District 3 Power Rankings) and Pequea Valley earned the top spot.

Saturday’s Games will be:

Game # 1:  9:00 a.m.  PV vs. Etown
Game # 2:  11:15 a.m.  Solanco vs. AC
Game # 3:  1:30 p.m. LS vs. Hempfield
Game # 4:  3:45 p.m. Penn Manor  vs. Donegal

Spring Sports History

Efforts to compile a complete list of Lancaster Lebanon League champions continues.  The latest update is for Baseball and Track & Field.

Baseball League History
Track & Field Individual History
Track & Field Team History

These records do not exist without the work of a lot or people.  The baseball list was compiled by Hempfield Head Baseball Coach Jeremy Morrison.  Penn Manor AD Jeff Roth and Conestoga Valley AD Zac Kraft teamed up to provide track & field team history.  The use of HyTek meet manager at the league championship meet and before that pa.milesplit.com hold a wealth of information about individual results.  But even pa.milesplit.com doesn’t have that information without people like Bob Trump, Jim Ellingsworth, Jim Albright, Bill Bauers, Jeff Bradley, Trey Jackson and Dave Roberts.

And yes, these lists are incomplete, but they are a start at documenting the history of LL League champions.

Blue Streaks Sweep

In a Girls and Boys Lacrosse championship double header, Manheim Township came out on top twice as both the Blue Streak girls and Blue Streak boys defended their 2015 LL League Championships.

In the early (girls) game, Hempfield tied it early at 2 before the Streaks reeled of 9 unanswered goals, stretching in to the second half.  Hempfield cut the deficit to 5 but could not get closer as Manheim Township won 13-7.

In the second game, Township jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over Lampeter Strasburg, eventually piling up a 7 goal lead at the half, 9-2.  LS opened the scoring in the second half, but could only ever cut the margin to 5, falling in the end 14-8.

Baseball Playoffs

The baseball playoffs, are just about set:

The winner of Thursday’s game between ELCO and Cocalico will advance to the playoffs along with Manheim Central.

If Manheim Central wins on Friday against ELCO they will be Section III champs and all playoff games will run as planned on Saturday with the winner of ELCO-Cocalico being the Section III Runner-Up.    However, if Manheim Central loses on Friday that will force a one game playoff for the Section III Title which would impact Saturday’s game.

If that happens, the Section III title game will be at 10am at War Memorial – hoping to beat the weather.   All playoff games will be moved to Monday Night with the 10am and 1pm games being played at Manheim Township at 4pm (Ephrata vs AC)  & 7pm (Lancaster Catholic vs Solanco).   The 4pm (Hempfield vs Section 3 Runner Up) & 7pm (PM vs Section 3 Champ) games will be played Monday night at War Memorial at 4pm & 7pm.

Another possibility is that ELCO and Manheim Central do not play on Friday due to weather or other act of God.  If faced with that game not being played Friday, those teams will need to make that game up on Saturday morning/afternoon.   The tie-breaker game will be Saturday night at War Memorial 6pm.  All playoff games will be move to Monday Night as mentioned above.

The Semi-Finals will still be Tuesday and the Finals on Thursday.  This is to avoid playing Friday if at all possible to give the teams in the championship game three days rest for their pitchers to throw in the opening round of Districts on Monday.

Quarterfinals, all Saturday 5/14 (hopefully) at War Memorial Field, Ephrata:
Section 2 Champion Ephrata vs Section 4 Runner Up Annville Cleona, 10 am
Section 4 Champion Lancaster Catholic vs Section 2 Runner Up Solanco, 1 pm
Section 1 Champion Hempfield vs Section 3 Runner Up, 4 pm
Section 3 Champion vs Section 1 Runner Up Penn Manor, 7 pm

Softball Playoffs

If you love the minutiae of sports rules, this post is for you.

The top 2 teams from each section will play in Saturday’s Softball quarterfinals.

Here is the breakdown for each section:

  • Section 1 – Penn Manor has won the section; Hempfield has secured 2nd place.
  • Section 2 – Solanco is 12-3 & Etown is 11-3. Solanco and Etown play Wednesday (weather permitting, naturally). If Solanco wins, they are section champs and Etown is second. If Etown beats both Solanco and Ephrata (scheduled Thursday), they are the champs, and Solanco is 2nd. If Etown beats Solanco and loses to Ephrata, there is a tie for first place. In that event, the tiebreaker game would be scheduled for 4:15 at a neutral site on Friday… unless, Wednesday’s Etown/Solanco regular season game is postponed and rescheduled for Friday. If that occurs, more details will follow later.
  • Section 3 – LS is the champion; Donegal is 13-3 and completed their schedule, & MC is 13-2 and plays LS Wednesday. If MC beats LS, MC becomes the 2nd place team and qualifies for leagues. If LS beats MC, MC and Donegal will both be 13-3 in league play, and we need to go to the 2nd-place tie-breaker criteria which is as follows…
    • A – ) Head-to-head – MC and Donegal split
    • B – ) Section record – An LS win over MC would put both teams at 7-3 in section play.
    • C – ) Vs Section Champ – An LS win Wednesday would make both MC and Donegal 0-2 vs LS.
    • D – ) Power Rankings – Donegal is at 0.698 right now; MC is at 0.673. If MC loses forcing the tie, their power ranking will not improve; therefore, based on tie-breaker criteria D, Donegal will be the second place team from section 3 if LS beats MC Wednesday.
  • Section 4 – AC is 10-4 and PV is 11-4. Annville plays Wednesday and Thursday; PV plays Wednesday. If both teams win the rest of the games or both lose one game, there will be a tie. In the event of a tie, a tie-breaker will be held on Friday at 4:15 at Warwick. If the weather forces regular season games to be pushed back to Friday, more details will follow later.

Once the dust of the regular season settles, the playoffs look like this:
